Before he started the dance I asked him to leave our newly married couple on the dance floor so that they would be on the dance floor when we find out who is the longest-married couple.  I stated that it makes a nice photo for the couple.  He says "That's not what I do."  I tried to reason, and finally, he asked if that's what the couple wanted.  To which I said, I don't know, however, it's a nicer look for the party and makes for a nice image.  He decided to ask the couple.  1065
They stayed on the dance floor and now we have several nice images of them on the dance floor with the couple married for 47 years.

I thought about this after the fact. As an experienced photographer, I think I had a feeling he was going to take our couple off the dance floor and wanted to be sure I was able to get the photos I felt would be special for our couple.  

There is nothing better than experience.  

To add to the experienced thought. 

Later in the evening, we were speaking with our Maitre'd.  He said to us that he appreciated working with us.  We were easy to work with and kept things moving and on time.  That he works with (I won't use the word he used) photographers who have no clue how to run the day.  Don't understand the nuisance of a wedding day.  We spoke a bit longer and we will be on their referral list in the future.  
Lauren and I have been a team for a long time.  We know the ins and outs of a wedding day.  No matter what happens we can handle it, fix it, help with it, carry it, or move it.

This was one of those times.  I was on one side of the door and Lauren on the other.  She peeked around to see if I was done or about the change the pose.  

It happens and usually make me laugh when I see the photo when reviewing the photos from the day.

Photography is all about light and how we see and use it.  Many times we'll be working at a location and "see" an idea or a scene.

This particular location was on the Jersey shore.  As I was checking out the house, I noticed the door frame leading out to the small deck.  The sun was lighting up the deck and the Adirondack chair.  Clouds in the sky.  I couldn't resist.  

0070 The second image was on the upper floor.  The sliding door lent to a perfect image for me.  The mirror the shadow all came together in my mind.  I often use the phrase, "I see things."  when I have an idea.

THIS is what I saw. Enough light in the room to give me a balanced (enough) exposure to see the shadow, her reflection, and detail in the back of the dress.  Yes, I lost some detail in the side of the dress due to the sunlight, however, that is part of the creative aspect.  I liked the "look".

I love historic buildings. So much history and character.   Our couple Jackie and Kyle were easy going, fun and emotional.   Which lead for a great day with tons of fantastic photos.

Take a look at the above photos.  What a difference an off-camera flash makes in your photos.  The left photo is without flash.  look at the eyes, especially.  The right image has a little bit of light tossed in for a little punch.  Notice the difference in the face and the eyes.

Setting up the scene.  How we pose or set up the image to get the look we want.  Hand position, the position of the doors, the groom.  The placement of his hands, all make the scene.  The rest is the exposure setting and a bit of editing magic.

This is an available light image.  We exposed for the light outside of the door.  That is what is lighting our couple in the image.

002 I recently had the opportunity to photograph a proposal. 

The proposal happened at Deep Cut Gardens in Holmdel.  I received a call from Austin about 2 weeks prior to the planned proposal date.  He asked If I photographed proposals, of course, being a wedding photographer.  We discussed his plans and settled on a time on that day.  I arrived early as to not give away my reason for being there.  The park is a common place for photographers, either photographing the park or wedding and portraits.

057 The day of he sent me a selfie, so I know who I was looking for.  I saw them arrive and let them pass me while "taking photos of the park".  When they were far enough past me, I began to follow discretely.  As they walked around the park, I took several photos.  I was able to pass them as they stopped to sit on a bench.  I walked up the path took a few photos of the park and then them through tree branches.  I then walked back to a gazebo, took a seat on a bench to "review my photos of the park".  As I was sitting, they walked past me, since he didn't know what I looked like, he looked back and I nodded, to confirm I was his photographer.  They turned back and walked into the gazebo.  I got up and walked away so to not give myself away.  I watched as he reached into his pocket, I turned and began to take a number of photos, from a distance.  As the proposal was progressing, I moved a little closer.  As the proposal ended, (She said yes) he turned and wave to me.  She was surprised not only the proposal, but also the fact he hired me to photograph the event.

I believe the reason for this is simple.  We pay attention to the small details when creating your photographs.  Where hands are in your photos, how people are connected or engaged with each other, a slight head tilt here and there.  These little details make a huge difference in your photos.

When researching your photography, look closely at the photos.  Look for those details.  You'll see a difference, trust me.  When looking at our photos, you'll notice things like head tilted toward the camera, couples leaning together, not away from each other.   You'll notice clean lines with the bridal party, guys hands all positioned the same, girls flowers all held the same way and more.

Well, this is the nature of our world today.  We as photographers, need to adapt.  Either MOVE or find a different spot when the bride walks up the aisle.  Or, use phones in our photo.

Years ago when this started to become an issue, we started photographing the bride's entrance from a vantage point below the congregations, closer to the door.  This way I can turn, after the bride and her father, passes me to get the above photo.

Now if you look closely, there are 5 phones or cameras visible.  You can see the Groom's (sunglasses) expression as his about to be wife, walks toward him.  The other thing that gets me about this photo:  That is her mom (hands clasped together) watching her and her father.  The lady in the black and white dress has her hand on mom's shoulder so she doesn't step in front of her. 

The above photo is one of our favorite all-time cell photo photos.  We think we should embrace the cellphone world and use them as a "prop".  Here are a few photos.

Since we will be in the heart of the bridal show season next month, we thought we'd give you a few helpful hints to make your show experience more enjoyable and productive.

Bring pre-printed mailing labels with all of your info printed on them.  

Names, address, email, phone number, wedding date, and ceremony and reception locations.   The various vendors will most likely ask for this info.  Ask you to fill out a form.  The labels will save you a lot of writing and time.

Bring a set of "gold star" stickers or any type of sticker that will stand out to you.  "Star" the vendors you like and want to follow up with after the show.  This will make sorting out all the stuff you collect at the show a lot easier and faster.  Keep the info you starred and toss the rest.

0148Sony A74 Many couples that we meet at the shows will schedule a meeting with us while at the show.  Have your schedule handy.  Set up a calendar on your phone for your wedding appointments.  Easy to do.  A second (or third) calendar will be available on your phone along with your personal or work schedule.  You'll be able to see everything and scheduling will be easier.

We play a little game at our wedding.  We cannot play at every wedding it depends on who we see.  We occasionally will see a celebrity look-a-like.

We have seen Abraham Lincoln, Bill Clinton, Tony Stark, and others.  Even someone that looked like a friend.

Most recently, Tiny Tim for those on the older side and the Geico caveman.   Even the groom agreed with me on the Geico caveman.

We were at the GardenState Expo Center for a Bridal Show.  Excellent show.  Many couples attended. We had a lot of great conversations, including one in particular.

0192 One father was looking over our work and said that our work was the best of the show.  I thanked him and we conversed a bit more before he left our display area.  Now, I know photography is subjective and our work may not appear to be "the best of show" to everyone.  There were several photographers there all with great work.  Several are friends who we respect and have worked with over the years as they need an extra hand. I take these things in stride.

004 A little later in the show, the same father is back at our display with another person, what I would assume was the "other half's" father.  They were flipping through one of our books and discussing our photos.  I couldn't hear what they were saying.  One of them points to a few photos, looks at me, and says "You're old school, aren't you?"   Noticing the photos he was pointing to, I knew exactly what he was asking.  He was referring to the lighting in our photos.  Turns out both men are landscape and nature photographers, so they have some knowledge. 

0491 copy I told them I "grew up" on film.  There was NO looking at the back of the camera to see if you got it right, you HAD to know you got it right before creating that image.  We continued discussing photography in general and wedding photography.  We finished our talk after a bit.

I like when a client has some knowledge of photography.  I feel they can see the benefit our booking us.  We are very good at what we do, and I believe it shows in our work.  I believe you can see that too.

Recently I drove to Delaware to help our friend Erica of Erica Beck Photography.  We photographed a wedding for a friend of hers. 

Working with my friend Erica is always fun.  We met a number of years back at the photography school and we became fast friends.  As is typical among our group of photographers, we help each other in several way whenever possible.
As it turned out the wedding ceremony and reception were at The Atlantic Hotel in Berlin, Maryland, which was the hotel use in the movie "Runaway Bride" with Julia Roberts and Richards Gere and others.  The happens to be a room referred to as the "Richard Gere room" as it was his room during filming.  So, now I have to rewatch the movie to check it out.

The hotel had a number of great photos ops. _JPM0346 (1)   Here is one of them.  Staircases can make for great photos and interesting angles. 

I hope you enjoyed my story.  I wish I had more photos to share.  Since this wasn't my wedding, I only have this one.  I can transfer photos to my phone for editing and this was the one I chose.  There are many great photo from the day.

We had a great day, I was able to catch up with Rick Ferro, who I hadn't seen in a while and meet Rick Friedman, a great guy, by the way.

The event was held at T&F camera in Vineland, NJ.  A camera store and more.  The store has a portrait, area behind the building with all sorts of setting.  Old truck, a school bus, and several home-built photography areas.  A great day.

With the advancement in lighting technology, many venues include uplighting or your DJ can provide uplighting if your venue does not include it.

There is a fine line between being able to see the uplighting in your photos and overpowering your photo with a flash that you cannot see the uplighting or the uplighting "spills onto the dance floor covering your guests in colored light.

As professional photographers, we have to know that balance or how to get that balance.  Each room being different shapes and sizes make a big difference in the camera setting and if the uplighting is visible.  After all, the uplighting is there for a reason.  Let's be sure it is visible in your photos.

We try very hard to be easy going, flexible, you know, go with the flow types.  We never know how your baby will be while in our studio.  Some will sleep through everything.   Others will be more alert.  In a perfect world we would like your baby to sleep as much as possible.  We can make suggestions that will help with that.  

We suggest bringing a few of your favorite outfits.  We do have props but feel free to bring something for home. 

When you are ready for your baby's newborn session, we suggest within a week of birth.  Typically, during that time babies will sleep a lot.   Which is exactly what we want, however it doesn't always work out that way. It's one of those things that we nor you have total control over. LOL!

We offer packages that are photo files only and packages that include books.  It's up to you. We are here to help you make the best choices for you.  

If you choose a package without a book, you can always add a book later.  Many couples decide on a files only package to keep upfront expenses down and add a book later.

016 We also offer a "Gift Registry".  Our gift registry is a way for you friends and family help you pay for your wedding photography.  We set up a page for each couple.  The page allows your friends and family purchase gift certificates you can apply to your balance OR and this is what most do, purchase a book.

Not too long ago we started to build our Venue Spotlight page.  The Venue spotlight Page is exactly that.  A spotlight on venues, catering facilities, photo locations, parks, and such.  We thought this would help anyone that was still looking for a venue or photo location find something they might like.

10 26 2019 Blog 002 (Sheet 2) A great many photographers only deliver your photos by way of a download. No disks, no thumb drives.  

Anyway, you now have your photo files downloaded to your hard drive.  Well, hard drives fail, and computers crash.  You don't want to lose your photos to a computer issue.  We suggest picking up a few thumb drives, they're not expensive.  Place your photo on 2 or 3 thumb drives or an external USB drive.  Another suggestion is Amazon Drive, Dropbox, or other online services.  In my mind, there is no such thing as too many backups.

I keep multiple backups on and offsite.

Blog 2020 002 (Sheet 2)

A while back one of our brides made a request.  She did not want us in the church proper during the ceremony.  Saying she had attended a  number of recent weddings where the photographers were very obtrusive during the ceremony.  She didn't want that at her wedding.  We assured her we were discrete and very unobtrusive.  Still, she insisted.  We abided by her request.

Once the wedding arrived, we were prepared for the situation.  We stayed in the lobby just outside the church proper.  We photographed the ceremony from the lobby through the doors using long lenses.  We got a lot of great photos despite the restrictions.  Our bride expected no photos of the ceremony due to her request.  We were able to give her the photos she should have by being prepared and knowledgable in what we are able to do with our experience and our equipment.

The Seaview Hotel is a large hotel with lots of photo spots.  The staff was helpful and friendly.

Swan Lake reception building is on the lake.  You can have your ceremony on the dock.  The banquet manager, Lauren could not have been nicer.

Engagement sessions are a great way for us to get to know you and you to know us.  We often go to a location picked by our couples, because it's special to them.  

Some couples ask for a suggestion for a location.  It's really up to you.  We can go nearly anywhere you wish.

When we're setting up a photo, Lauren will often fix the bride's dress or set the pose.  I'll set up the lighting and help with the posing.  Many times, while we're going through our process, I catch Lauren in all sorts of photos setting or fixing something.  Here are a few of our latest.  Sorry, Lauren...

This is a follow up on the previous post about unplugged weddings.

A number of years back we noticed this trend of cellphones and Ipads at weddings. It never really bothered us. We made adjustments and included them in our photo set.

By adjustments, one thing was to NOT be at the top of the aisle where most photographers would stand and have all the phones in the way. I chose to be farther down the aisle. I still get the photo of the bride and her father entering the church walking down the aisle. However, I was also able to get a second image of the groom over, or between the shoulders of dad and her daughter. It's a wonderful image. I'm usually able to get several photos of the dad, his daughter and her soon to be husband.

An unplugged wedding is entirely your choice. If all the phones bother you, do it. If it doesn't, that's fine too. It doesn't bother us.

Restoration work has always been a speciality.  Something I enjoy.  It's fun to see old photo come back to life as I'm working on it.

I believe I know what it is that they like.

It's the attention to detail that we take in our approach to your wedding day photos.  It's the little things.  Hand position, Feet position, how we position your body. How to hold your flowers.  How to relax your body during photos and more.
 

One of those little details has to do with your head, yes your head.
 

Take a look at the two example sets.  Example 2
Which of the two do you feel has a nicer feel or a better look?  Notice the heads of our bride and groom in each example.  In the lower image of each example, we ask our couple to tilt their head slightly toward the camera.  It's a small thing that only takes a few seconds to explain or show.  

Things like this will make a world of difference in your wedding day photos.

Here are a few photos from a recent wedding.

The first one is from later in the day, closer to sunset.  Lots of color in the sky.  Easy pose for our couple and a wonderful sunset photo.

The second is from earlier in the day.  A "Dip" pose with our couple.  Same spot.  Different time of day.  Still a great photo.

time of day, location, lighting, and angle of the photo, all make a difference.

Speaking of the angle, the reason we decided on the lower angle was to hide the golfers behind our couple below the hill.  We were lying down in the grass to capture this photo.  Anything for the image.

It's amazing what a little editing can do.  The original is still a nice image, however, editing can bring out the colors.  Cropping can give the image a better look or angle.

The plan was to arrive on the church grounds prior to the ceremony to create our family photo, bridal party photos, and couple photos. 

We planned our time so we could finish early enough to hide our couple before their guest arrived.  Our timing worked perfectly.  We got a lot of great photos and had a lot of fun with our couple, their family, and friends. 

The Last photo here is an image in front of the reception venue which they requested.  We typically do a "night" image at most venues.

Since it was a little humid that evening and I was inside an air-conditioned building, my lens fogged over, which I feel added to the image.

Many couples often say to us as we begin their session, "OK, tell us what to do."  Most times we understand their trepidations about their session.  Nervous, not knowing what to do.

We get it.  That's where your trust in us to lead you comes in.  For some couples, we need to direct more.  Others, not so much.  We try to watch our couple and see how they are with each other.  We want your engagement photos to show you and your personalities.  Often we hear that our couples have never had photos done, only selfies.  So, this type of photo session is a new experience.  We understand the nervousness.

Many of our couples will pick the location for their session many times it's where they were engaged or a favorite spot they often visit.  On some occasions, we'll make a few suggestions for a location and our couple will choose.   

We enjoy our engagement sessions.  For us, we got to know our couples better and can see how they'll be on their wedding day. 

Let's call it a "prep session" for the big day.  Let's have some fun and get to know each other so you'll have an excellent idea of what to expect on your wedding day.

Once the bride and her father pass me, I turn and try to get the groom's expression and emotions between the bride and her father walking toward the groom.  

Most times I can get it as you see here.  Occasionally I'll get the image with the groom to the side, which is still a great photo.

Their photos, ceremony, and reception were at Patterson's Family Barn in Howell.  A great location for a rustic type wedding.  

The day went off without a hitch.  Great photos lots of fun and smores at the fire pit towards the end of the evening.  What could have been better?

We did not shoot in front of the window, however, along the window, using the curtain more as a backdrop and a defuser to soften the light.  I think it worked out very well.

We need to know exactly what we plan to do at any given moment on any given day.  We never know exactly what we are walking into, especially if we have never been, for example, a particular hotel. The second two are how we saw the images.  This is why you hire an experienced photography team.

This was created on the spot.  This is not photoshopped.  Yes, this could have been created with fancy editing, HOWEVER, if we pay attention to our surroundings, our backgrounds, images like this can be done on the spot. No editing tricks.  A real honest to goodness photograph. 

It's our job to create wonderful photos for you on your big day.  That's our goal.  Do we do the fancy editing?  We sure can.  We would rather create those photos as we see them.

We haven't ever talked about this on our blog.  I think it's about time we did.

Lauren and I pride ourselves on our work and attention to the details.  Little things, or changes that can make all the difference in an image.  A subtle change that you may not think makes a difference but does.  Sometimes a huge difference.  Our point, Do you want someone to just take pictures, or do you want a photographer to create?

The first couple under the tree, A little suggestion to him.  Lean her into a slight back dip, and we have a much more dramatic image.  The left photo is nice too, however, the right has a more fun dramatic feel.

Next our couple next to the door.

Left is a nice photo of our couple using the door as an accent piece in the image.  "Guys, lean into each other a little.", and we have a much nicer, more intimate feel and look to the photo.

And last but not least, with the hats.  We love this look, but having her turn her hat out and move her arm back gives us so much more to the image.  It gives us the appearance of movement and fun.

These are the things we pay attention to while creating your photos.  The small touches, the little things that can make or break an image.  Laure or I will often "tweak" our posing on the fly while we're working with you.  you may not realize what we are doing by making a suggestion or change, however, you'll notice that in your wedding day photos.

_JPL6072-PanoSony A74 My wife and I took our 40th-anniversary trip a year late, (covid).  We went with another couple also celebrating their 40th a year late and a number of friends.  

We went on a Mediterranean cruise.  Seven (7) ports in nine (9) days, plus 2 extra days in Barcelona to start the trip and 2 days in Rome to end the trip.

The trip was a once-in-a-lifetime type of trip.  We visited places we'll probably never get the chance to visit again.

I came back with around 1500 photos.

We studied, lighting and posing techniques, and editing techniques.  We also had a lot of fun creating photos, hanging with friends we don't get to see that often, and making new friends.

A few days ago, I had a conversation with a potential wedding couple.  Their first question was, “ What makes you and Lauren so great?”  I chuckled, not really understanding if it was a serious question or a comment on what they saw on our website. So, I ask if they wanted me to answer that or did they have other questions.  To which they said I could answer.

Now, I am not particularly fond of those types of questions, (what makes you better than photographer ABC?) because I don’t know what makes us great.

Anyway, I answered something like this:

I don’t know what makes us great.  I do know that Lauren and I have been a team for many years.  Our style has developed over those years.  We are easygoing and enjoy what we do.  We have a lot of fun when we're at a wedding and that comes through in our style and how we work with our couples.  If we’re having fun, you will, too.

 

Our experience and wedding day savvy are a few things I feel give us an advantage, especially over newer photographers. I feel our work speaks for itself.  We know how to handle timing, large bridal parties, families, and how to get the photos you want quickly so you’re able to enjoy your day.

We know what we need to do.  We know how to get it done and we can get it done quickly.  We can “See the scene” for our bride and groom portraits.  We can go into any location and quickly pick our “photo op” spots.  We can move through our posed and not so posed portraits quickly due to the techniques we often use.  Our goal is to get you into your cocktail hour on time so you can spend time with your family and friend and enjoy your reception.

This is something I like to do just for fun.  Trying to photograph a moving object zooming across the sky while holding a heavy zoom lens isn't easy.  It's a bit of a challenge.  The weight od the lens, the jets blasting by overhead very, very fast, all the while trying to frame the image.

Night shots 001 (Sheet 1)

One of our favorite images to create on a wedding day is a night time photo.  A photo, later in the evening at your venue using a picturesque spot and unique lighting.  Something with a little flair, something special.

We'll use the lights at your venue and/or our own lighting to create a beautiful image.  Here are a few from recent wedding.  We hope enjoy seeing them as much as we enjoy creating them.

12 05 2020 01 Assuming a wedding day where we do all of the photos in one location and our couple is doing a first look and finishing our photos before the ceremony, which many of our weddings are, this is how we lay out the timing of our day.

Lauren and I arrive about three hours before the start of the ceremony (we tend to be a little early). We will split up.  She photographs one side and me the other.  Then we do the first look.  Sometimes we'll do the first look, first.  We can do that either alone, just us and our couple, or allow everyone to watch and get their reactions.  First looks are often emotional and touching moments.

013 Then we get into group photos of your party and families and finish with our couple.  Then into the ceremony and reception.  This is a simplified look at this type of wedding, however, you get the idea.  As I said, figure starting three hours prior to your ceremony start time.  The time gives us some room for "stuff".   "Stuff" always happens that eats up time.  Better to have a little extra time built-in.

In a nutshell that's a day in the life of our wedding day.  Our day is anywhere from 8 hours on up most often 10 to 11 hours long.

The Knot does this annually.   A survey for the average cost of a wedding in the US.  Note your state.  The national average may be higher or lower than your state.  Don't assume 19,000 for the cost of your wedding if your wedding is in, let's say, New Jersey.

The average cost of a wedding in NJ is 47,000 compared to 19,000 nationally.  With that in NORTHEN NJ that cost is higher.

The average cost of photography nationally is 2500.  Our base package is slightly higher.  However, we offer more than most photographers in our packages.  Many items most photographers cannot or will not do.  Best to compare to find your perfect photographers.

Ok, So... Photoshop is full of functionality that no one person will ever master EVERYTHING, I believe.  I use Photoshop for what I use it for.  Occasionally I have some time I'll try to learn something new.  The past week I've been playing with double exposures.  One photo on top of, or blended into another.  Here are a few I've been working on.  I hope you like them.

Let's see... Three photos were done as separate images combined into one.

Each photo is photographed with a single light.  We set up a loop light pattern.  The light was to the camera left and a little behind our subjects. 

The difficult part was getting the dog to stay still.  

Once the photos were created the editing begins.  Combining them in Photoshop is easy.  Here is the final image.

We haven't gone in a few years mainly due to covid and the location. I'm not a fan of flying, I'd rather drive. So, IF I'd have to fly, occasionally I'll skip that location.  I have, in the past flown to Arizona and New Orleans.  Just that flying is not my favorite thing.

Lots of classes and a large trade show, a wonderful image presentation.  Overall a good time with friends I don't get to see often.  Here are a few photos of the trip.

This wedding was at a restaurant in downtown Audubon NJ.   We took a walk into the shopping district b way of an ally.   I loved the red wall and the shadows as we walked by.  I had to stop.  Couldn't resist.  I hope you like them as much as we did creating them.

We'll take a little time during your cocktail hour to put together about 75 photos from earlier in the day.  It runs on my laptop off to the side.  It's not a big production. Same day editing is nothing new.  We've been doing this for years.  We were one of the first in our area to offer this service.   Ever since the age of digital, we offered same day editing.

We include a 10 photo 4x6 book, ready at the beginning of your reception and a slideshow on our digital frame.

It's one huge sneak peak at your wedding photos.   A quick look a what we create throughout you day.  A way to ramp up the excitement of seeing your full set of wedding photos for the first time.

About an hour into your reception we have our slideshow and book ready for you.  Most times sooner.

For 2022 we have put together two new packages.  The first is a Basic package.  No book included.  Simply Lauren and John for the day, your engagement session, download of your photo file with a print release.  The second includes a photo book.  

We are trying to keep things simple and easy.  The packages can be personalized to fit your exact needs.  Maybe you want a larger book or something for your parents.  Maybe you have no need for an engagement session.  Let us know exactly what you want or need and we'll create a personalized packager joust for you.

Oh, boy, did I get lucky.  No rain.  Overcast, but no rain.  We had plenty of time for photos.  AND a special visitor.  We were glad he found the time in his busy schedule right before Christmas to stop by.

Now, finally, they were able to have the reception they wanted.  We were at Perona Farms in Sussex County NJ.  We did more photos of our couple, families, and bridal party before the party.  With the crazy covid stuff over the past year-plus, Katelyn and Chris were able to part.

0220 Lauren will go to the guys and I'll go to the girls.  Occasionally, if logistically possible, Lauren will help me finish up with the girls.  That doesn't always happen.  Depending on drive time to the church, I want to be done with plenty of time for you to pack up, get something to eat, and ready to leave for the church.  Again, depending on drive time. I'll typically start 2 to 2 1/2 hour prior to the church start time. 

If you are doing a full mass, figure being on the church grounds about 2 hours.  Including receiving line and family photos at the church.

Sometimes we'll stop at a photo location for bridal party photos.  Sometimes directly to the reception location.  I'd like 45 to 60 minutes to get photos done so we can get you into your cocktail hour.  This also gives us time to prep for your reception.

10 26 2019 Blog 006 (Sheet 6) First, let me say, if you are not planning on a first look, expect to use much of your cocktail hour to get photos done.  The reason is, we have to get you and your friends and family with our couple together.  Prior to the ceremony, we would typically do photos with each side of the party separately.  I'll take one side and Lauren the other.  Occasionally, depending on your venue we have to be sure you don't accidentally see each other.  So, we'll work that out.

Since we are not doing a first look, we don't need to start as early as we would with a first look.  That may depend on you venue.  Occasionally your venue will be large enough that Lauren and I can work in different parts of your venue and not risk you seeing each other.  However, there are venues where we have to work in the same areas.  In this case, we'll work with one side, then the other, and may need more time upfront.

007 Then the ceremony and after we will do photos with everyone together. Families, your party, and our couple.  This could take up a good portion of your cocktail hour, depending on the number of people.  Hopefully, we can finish quickly enough to get you into some of your cocktail hour.  Then into your reception.

Ceremony at Saint Catherine's in Farmingdale.  Photos in Spring Lake and the reception at The Shore Club.

Our wedding for Jennifer and Joe was at the Chapel at Allaire State Park.  A fantastic location for a wedding.  The chapel was build in the 1800's and well maintained.  The grounds make for fantastic wedding day photos.

We've been a little lax lately with our post.  We've been busy.

This was at the requests of our bride.  She had been to several weddings where the photographer(s) were very "present" during the ceremony.  To the point that she noticed enough that she didn't way us inside the church proper.  We were asked to stay back in the vestibule.  I assured her we would not be noticed, we are very discreet.  She was adamant on this point, so we stayed in the vestibule.  We asked that the main doors remain open, she agreed.

We were challenged a bit to get what we could of the ceremony from a greater distance than we normally would and look for different angles.  

Below are a few photos.  She was amazed at what we were able to get.  She expected no photos of the ceremony at all, which she was fine with.  

BTW, The photo with the reflection was captured through the glass wall.  The statue was behind us and visible on the glass.  We thought it made for an interesting image for our couple.

Church 2 Church

Lauren and I have been working together a long time.  It's almost like we read each other's mind.  One of the advantages of an experienced team is their ability to work well together.   This makes it fast and easy for her and I to go from one set up or image to the next quickly.  Here is a look at three different image that we were able to great in a limited time frame.  Quick changes in the pose, lighting and camera angle.  We can create many different looks quickly.

Blog Pos Rain Lauren and I recently had an engagement session and we got just a little wet.  Our session with Jennifer and Jamie was scheduled for a Wednesday afternoon.  We expected rain so we moved our start time up an hour assuming that would give us the time we needed before the rains came. 

071 We got through about 3/4 of our session when the skies started to get dark and we could hear the thunder off in the distance.  We got a few more photos in and started to head back to our cares when the rain hit us on the trail.  We figure we might as well get a few more photos in the rain.  We would never make it back to our cars without getting soaked. We got our photos and waited under a tree. That didn't help.  The tree was no protection.  We got very wet.  Anyway here are a few photos from our session.  Despite the rain and getting wet (anything to get that great images).  We hope you enjoy them.

This post is about a few things.  When Lauren and I are photographing a wedding we often will tell our subject to turn, move, tilt, or do something we feel is necessary for a better look to your photos.

This one is a quick "How we do it"  you can see the flack unite behind our couple in the left photo.  In the right photo, you'll notice a slight"rim" light around them.  This is a look we like to use occasionally.

This one is about head position.  We tell our couple when looking at each other, to slightly tilt your heads toward the camera.  We feel it's a nicer look.  With his head tilted away from the camera, we feel it loses something, which is difficult to explain, however, we think you can see what we mean in the bottom photo.  There is also a difference in cropping and photographic angle.  We do this to give you several different looks at the same scene.

004 Lauren and I have a wonderful day with Bea and Carlos.  The weather was great.  Although they had to reschedule twice due to Covid, they were able to put together a beautiful day with family and friends.  They got ready at their home with the ceremony under a te3nt in their back yard.  After the ceremony, we went to a nearby park, Historic Smithville Village in Mount Holly.  A great location for photos.  Here are a bunch for your viewing pleasure.

Despite Covid, our couple Brian and Kristen, still pull off a great wedding day.  They had to make a few last-minute adjustments due to new regulations, however, everything worked out.

From the cutest ring bearers and flower girls to everything g else, we had a great day.

They had to move the reception to an earlier time.  That didn't affect what we needed to get done photographically.  We were still able to get all the photos we wanted and needed.  

We even got a few fun, unique photos in.
