Shopping by price.............

Here I am sitting in my studio doing a little editing, the phone rings. I answer, "Thank you for calling South Street, this is John, How may I help you?". If the caller is interested in wedding photography, nearly every time the first words I hear are: "How much do you charge for a wedding?"
No, Hi John, no greeting, no nothing (that does bug me a bit), right into price. That's just how people roll.
Now I realize when most people call a business, they really don't know how they will be greeted, nor what they plan to say. All they have in their head is price. I realize we all want to spend our money wisely, however shopping for wedding photography by price as your first priority could be costly in the end.
I'll tell you two quick stories:
Number one:
We recently photographed a wedding, the second for this family. We photographer both sisters. The first, five years back. When sister #2 stopped by to pick up her thank you card order, she told me this story.
She said:
"We were in a wedding recently. We had sent her to you but she thought your were expensive so she booked someone cheaper." She continued, "Let me tell you..., her photographer was so disorganized, kept having problems with her camera, didn't know how to organize groups. She missed so may opportunities because she would look at the back of her camera and shake her head." She finally told me, that her friend is so disappointed she wont show anyone her photos.
Similar situation, We photographer two sisters, 3 years apart. The day the second sister stopped by to review her album design with me, as we had finalized the design and saying good by, she say to me, exactly this:
"John, I have to tell you something about my wedding day." Now I start to think/wonder, what in the world this could be, did I do something, not do something? She continues. "I appreciate you and Lauren more NOW, after being in my friends wedding this past weekend." Continuing she says, "So disorganized, no one helped her with her dress or flowers, she couldn't control who was needed for photos, Finally my sister and I took over and started posing groups and the bridal party." "We told her to book you but she didn't want to pay your price. I KNOW her photos wont look anything like mine do. I feel bad for her but it was her decision, now she'll have to live with it."
What do I sat in a situation like this? There is nothing I can say, really. Nothing I can do or say. Anyway... just a few storing from my own experiences (I have more) that hopefully explain why cheaper isn't always better. There is a reason they say, "You get what you pay for."
